Be yourself and enjoy life is the message I get from the poem "WILD GEESE" by Mary Oliver. This poem was instantly liked by me because it breaks the convention of the world! The world says be good to everyone, but Mary Oliver on the other hand says "you don't have to be good"! Further she says "you don't have to walk on your knees/ For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting". She she tries to explain to the readers that you don't have to do things that you don't like, things that doesn't make you feel happy, things that seems a burden to you and on doing them you may repent later. In life there have been so many moments where we are doing things what we don't like. For example a student takes up a course like medical or engineering only because he was pressurised by family and that he would get a better salary later on. But would he give his 100% when he studies his course? would he enjoy it? he is supposed to enjoy these days of his life whereas he would be cursing his situation every single moment of his life! And that's what even Oliver says, "You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves".
She goes on to say that you can tell me your problems and I will tell you mine. We may have problems in our lives but the world doesn't stop for you! The sunlight and the clear droplets of rain will move on over the mountains, the trees and the rivers. The people around you wouldn't stop for your problems. The wild geese are heading home after an adventourous day, flying across the vast and bright blue sky! You may feel lonely in life but the world will always be by your side, gives you a canvas for your imagination and calls out to you as they call out to the wild geese, harsh and exciting. She ends the poem by saying that in this world everybody has a place, so there is no reason to feel lonely. You have the world for yourself!
