A work of art which did not begin in emotion is not art. If the emotion is strong enough , so is the painting. One makes use of pigments, but one paints with ones emotions. Our full range of emotions is our palette with which we bring color to our lives.
This painting by Angolie Ela Menon tells us so much about it , but yet confides to itself. Even a look at it , makes you feel sad as you see a widow lady who seems to look like she is in her late 30's with two of her children , a son and an older daughter. The painting has a dark background which adds on to dolefulness. We cannot help but notice the misery and melancholy in their eyes, none of them meeting ours. The boy takes the front position which could be showed as though , he now has to lead the family, his mother followed by his sister. The mother definitely looks out to him, The year of the painting 1986 , takes us back to our histories and makes us empathise with the people in the painting. The mother and her children seemed to have lost hope and faith in themselves. The mother looks extremely anguished and hopeless but at the same time concerned for her children. This picture has so many stories hidden within it looking for a voice which has been beautifully portrayed by Menon and this is definitely one of those paintings which cannot be shadowed from a passerby. One glance and it says it all.
